EDCI 720 Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

About the Course

A course designed to prepare subject specialists who teach in higher education. It focuses on the characteristics of adult learners and varied methods of teaching them, considering their needs. It addresses curriculum planning in the context of creating course syllabi and lesson plans, and instructional planning focusing on teaching processes, preparation of learning materials, and evaluation.

Course Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:

  • Exhibit knowledge and skills in teaching adults in higher education.
  • Prepare a personal teaching philosophy document.
  • Create selected curriculum documents using the curriculum design principles.
  • Prepare lesson plans and micro-teach lessons using selected instructional processes.
  • Critically analyze selected articles and videos.
  • Develop a teaching e-portfolio.

Facilitator/Developer

PREMA GAIKWAD, PhD


DR. PREMA GAIKWAD is a professor in the Education Department at AIIAS. She is from India and has been teaching for 50 years. She is married to Dr. Samuel Gaikwad, who is also a professor in the Education Department at AIIAS. The couple is blessed with two sons who are surgeons, the older son in India, and the younger son in England.

Dr. Prema served as Chair of the Education Department from 2007 to 2011 and 2013-2015. In addition, she was an editor of the “International Forum,” an internationally double-blind peer-reviewed journal produced by the graduate school of AIIAS.

She has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, written several chapters in edited books, and co-authored a two-volume book on Integration of Faith and Learning. She is passionate about teaching and has conducted numerous professional development seminars and workshops for teachers internationally. Online modality of teaching is one of her favorite avenues for teaching. She has created several online courses for AIIAS.
