AIIAS welcomes application from persons showing initiative, maturity, and interest in learning. Flags Magazine

WELCOME TO THE FLAGS DIGITAL LIBRARY

Flags is the semi-annual international magazine for alumni and friends of the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies (AIIAS), a graduate-level educational institution of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Flags is mailed to all Adventist college and university libraries worldwide.

Our Latest Issue: December 2023 | Volume 18, Number 2

AIIAS celebrates its 50th founding anniversary from its small beginnings as a graduate seminary voted into existence by the Far Eastern Division in 1972. AIIAS continues to thrive, thanks to the support of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the many people who have dedicated themselves to the mission of making AIIAS what it is today. Although AIIAS primarily serves the Asian region, AIIAS graduates serve as dedicated leaders around the world.

This special issue of Flags celebrates what God has wrought for and through AIIAS over the past 50 years. You can learn more about the history of AIIAS through our recently-published 50th anniversary book, AIIAS: The First 50 Years. “AIIAS, press on!”

Introducing the “Issues Series”, in which Flags encourages healthy discussion of pertinent issues in today’s world.

This issue of Flags prioritizes the importance of caring for mental health in preparing and sustaining leaders in their service. The Osadchuk family, depicted on our cover, left their homeland soon after the Russia-Ukraine War began. Hearing of an opportunity to earn graduate degrees while escaping the tragedies and suffering in their region of the world, AIIAS students Henadii and Angelina moved to AIIAS. They now study in a safe environment where their daughter Margarita can happily grow and where their family’s mental health, among other aspects, is nurtured.

The vision of AIIAS is "A Christ-centered community of leaders with a heart for mission."
This issue of Flags is devoted to the influence of AIIAS on our alumni from around the globe. They answer the call to serve and make a difference worldwide. Master of Divinity alumna Mariju Pimentel represents all alumni who have emerged triumphant through both personal challenges and the rigorous academic experience at AIIAS, ready to serve and expectant for the joy of humble service that lies before them.

SSD is the headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Southern-Asia Pacific region and is one of 13 regional divisions. Countries included in this region are Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, and islands of the Pacific. The Seventh-day Adventist Church operates in 203 countries using 717 languages with a world membership of almost 13 million. The name “Seventh-day Adventist” highlights two of the distinguishing characteristics of this Christian denomination. “Seventh-day” refers to the day of the week, Saturday, on which Adventists worship God as instructed throughout the Bible. “Adventist” refers to the hope Seventh-day Adventists have in Jesus’ soon return to this earth.

1000 Missionary Movement (1000MM)

The campus of the 1000 Missionary Movement is only a 7-10 minute drive from AIIAS. Dedicated church members come here from around the world to train for missionary service in countries such as Korea, India, Indonesia, Russia, and the Philippines, to name a few.

The Adventist University of the Philippines (AUP) is about a 30 minute drive from AIIAS. AUP offers various undergraduate degrees and some graduate programs. There is also a high school on the campus. Known formerly as Philippine Union College, AUP is one of the oldest Adventist educational institutions in Asia and the first Adventist university in the Philippines.

FAMOUS PLACES TO VISIT NEAR AIIAS

Tagaytay

Just around 15 minutes drive, you can reach Tagaytay City. Visit Tagaytay city, a pleasant city, the home of Taal Volcano, which is reputed to be the world’s smallest and yet most active volcano. It stands on its own island amidst a landscape of ash and cinder. The breathtaking views of Taal Volcano and lake is a must see for everyone visiting Philippines.

Aside from the volcano, the city also has many site attractions such as Tagaytay Zoo, Picnic Grove, People’s Park, and a horse riding park. From McDonalds to Japanese Cooking, you can enjoy dinner with your family or friends while enjoying the cool breeze of Tagaytay and the views of Taal Volcano.

Tagaytay City, located 2,500 feet above sea level, enjoys a cool and invigorating climate characterized by a relatively low temperature, low humidity, and abundant rainfall. The average temperature is 22.7 degrees Celsius. For this reason, Tagaytay, with its cool weather, balmy winds, and foggy mists is called the “second summer capital” of the country, after Baguio City.

Enchanted Kingdom

Around 30 minutes drive (near AUP), you can find Enchanted Kingdom, a perfect place for family entertainment. This Disney-like playground is equipped with various rides from 11- storey space shuttle to grand carousel, which will surely give you amusement and enjoyment at an affordable entrance fee. Alumni Homecoming – May 2017

Approximately 80 representatives of the AIIAS Alumni that are widespread along 77 countries attended the Homecoming Banquet with the theme Reconnect. Relive. Respond.

“I’d like to challenge you as graduates and as people who are on fire for the Lord to share, in some way, a part of what AIIAS instilled in you and part of the vision that AIIAS has for you,” proposed Dr. Stephen Guptill, AIIAS President. “God is using you in a powerful way and we praise God for that.”

On the evening of May 2, 2017, the attendees were able to reconnect with each other, relive memories during their years at AIIAS, and respond to the call to be leaders that represent the entire AIIAS Alumni family.

The president of the Southern Asia-Pacific Division, Dr. Saw Samuel, shared a message about his impressions for AIIAS and how AIIAS has influenced to impact his personal life. “AIIAS taught us to learn to be diverse in nature but united in Christ’s mission… How we respond has an eternal implication. AIIAS has been playing a vital role for our church in accomplishing our mission… Each one of us are accountable to AIIAS who have called you to have skills in leading out in administration, education, business, healthcare, in ministry and missiology.”

A meal was shared with a spirit of collegiality. There were also a number of musical and cultural renditions by selected members of the AIIAS community.
