CHMN 630 Health Ministries

About the Course

The study of the Adventist Health Ministry from the revelation, scientific, and educational perspectives. This course focuses on health, disease, and healing dynamics from revelation and scientific viewpoints. Emphasis is given to medical missionary work at the church and evangelistic levels. Simple techniques of maintaining personal health and methods for combining the gospel and health are discussed.

Time Investment

This class is both theory and practice-based. To guide you in managing your time, the dates and times of submission of the assignments are clearly presented in the course syllabus. For effective learning, assignments, especially discussion forums, which need immediate and timely feedback, need to be completed as scheduled. In general, you are required to:

  • submit three (3) journal reports for this class,
  • submit a report on a self-planned virtual exercise program for not less than 30 minutes, three times a week,
  • develop and present four 10-minute virtual health lectures, and
  • submit a report of a health ministry program

In view of the above requirements, you will need to spend at least 2 hours per day for five days. Approximately TEN hours per week for this course.

Course Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:

  1. Develop a church-based health program plan to address an identified health need.
  2. Implement and video-record a church-based health program plan.
  3. Prepare and submit a report of the implemented program.

GODWIN AJA, DrPH


Dr. Godwin Aja is a Professor of Health Promotion and Community Health in the Public Health Department of the AIIAS Graduate School. Before joining AIIAS, he taught at the university level in Nigeria for more than two decades. He also serves as an adjunct professor and as an external examiner/assessor for universities in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States.


Dr. Aja served as a World Health Organization (WHO) Temporary Adviser for the International Dialogue on Evidence–Action for Improving Health in Developing Countries (IDEA-Health) project. He has numerous publications to his credit and currently serves as the Aging and Health Promotion Section Editor of the Journal of Public Health in Africa, published by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).


He earned his Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) in Health Education from the Loma Linda University School of Public Health, California, USA.

EVELYN ALMOCERA, MPH, MD


Dr. Evelyn Almocera is a medical doctor/practitioner who serves as the AIIAS campus physician. She is a certified school health consultant by the Philippine Academy of Physicians in School Health. Currently, she serves as an associate professor in the Department of Public Health at AIIAS.


Aside from the health ministry, she has developed several online courses that are related to maternal and child health care, school and adolescent health, anatomy and physiology, and other health-related online courses.
