RESM 740 Qualitative Research (3 Credits)

A study of philosophical foundations and methods of qualitative research, including the question of purpose, design, data collection, interpretation, and presentation of findings.

Course Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:

  1. Understand the value, philosophy, purpose, and design of qualitative research, and be able to explain and apply these fundamentals.
  2. Analyze qualitative research with an eye to validity, reliability, generalizability, etc.
  3. Use appropriate philosophical and theoretical frameworks to guide qualitative research studies.
  4. Collect qualitative research data using different data collection methods.
  5. Analyze qualitative research data using appropriate data analysis frameworks.
  6. Employ ethical practices during the conduct of qualitative research studies.
  7. Ensure trustworthiness by using appropriate evaluative criteria for quality and strategies for each component.
  8. Prepare proposals for various qualitative research designs.

SHAWNA VYHMEISTER, PhD


Dr. Shawna Vyhmesiter worked at AIIAS from 2002 to 2013. During her time at AIIAS, she taught research, Curriculum, and TESOL courses, edited International Forum, and chaired the Education Department. She currently lives in Loma Linda, California, where she is involved with research and publishing. She loves Jesus, snorkeling, birding, reading, traveling, teaching, cooking, and writing.

Dr. Arceli Rosario has served AIIAS for ten years, from June 2012 to May 2022. Presently, she serves as the President of the Adventist University of the Philippines. As a guest teacher, she teaches doctoral courses in Education and TESOL. She credits the nurturing environment of AIIAS for enabling her to grow as a Christian scholar and leader.
